The Relationship Between Urban Development and Cultural Values: Skopje Sample

Abstract

Natural resources and historical and cultural heritage are the criteria taken into consideration in the practices of sustainable city. Protection approaches are developed depending on these resources. Particularly culture has a determining influence on the development and formation process of cities. In this sense, cultural values in Skopje, where people of different religions and ethnic origins live together, have influenced the development of the city. In this study, the influence of culture and cultural structures on urban space in the process of urban development has been evaluated in detail according to years. It has been identified that, especially after 1963 earthquake and Skopje 2014 projects, urban development in Skopje has taken place without any consideration of cultural values.
