Seclusion in closed psychiatric wards in Turkey

Abstract

In order to evaluate the practice of seclusion, a questionnaire on this subject was applied to 177 inpatients of the Psychiatric Clinic of Istanbul Faculty Medicine of these 177 patients, 95 were men and 82 were women. 68% of the patients were not regarding seclusion procedure as a part of their treatment. As a reason for seclusion, causing harm to one self or others was found significantly higher in women. Also, it was found significantly higher in women that the decision for seclusion was made by a staff member other than a doctor. As a result of this finding, the number of women who tohught that their seclusion was unnecessary was significantly more than men.
