Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Pseudomonas and Stenotrophomonas (Xanthomonas) maltophilia strains responsible for nosocomial infections
Abstract
We investigated antimicrobial susceptibilities of 263 Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 63 Pseudomonas spp., 29 Stenotrophomonas maltophilia recovered from various clinical materials collected from different departments of our faculty hospital. Susceptibilities to antimicrobials were assessed by the standard disc diffusion method. P. Aeruginosa resistance was least (17%) to imipenem. Resistance to sulbactam-cefoperazone, amikacin, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacine, piperacillin were 26%, 28%, 45%, 48%, 53%, respectively. Other Pseudomonads were similarly resistant. The resistance of S. maltophilia to amikacin and cefoperazone-sulbactam were 31% and 38%, respectively; no resistance was detected to cotrimoxazole. As a result, P. aeruginosa and other non-fermentative gram-negative bacilli are remarkably resistant in our faculty hospital and susceptibility tests must not be neglected.
