The ecophysiological characteristics ofAlnus hirsutaTrucz.,Populus albaL., andTaxodium distichumL. saplings under flooding conditions were examined. Flooding caused reduction in gross photosynthetic rate (Pgmax) and chlorophyll fluorescence yield and reduced the growth of theA. hirsutaandP. albasaplings. On the other hand, the reductions in gross photosynthetic rate (Pgmax) and chlorophyll fluorescence yield were small, and the growth was not reduced during flooding period in theT. distichumsaplings. The development of adventitious roots on the submerged stems was observed in theP. albaandA. hirsutasaplings. In theT. distichumsaplings, diameter growth of the submerged stems was accelerated under the flooding condition without the development of adventitious roots on them.
