Y FACTORS AND DENTAL HEALTH IN CHILDRENYelda KASIMOGLUIstanbul University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pedodontics, IstanbulABSTRACTDental caries have a multifactorial etiology, and the dietary component has an important role among the factors that cause it. One of the behaviors related to dental caries in children is the high consumption of sugar containing foods and drinks. The prevalence of dental caries in children varies and is reported to be high. Dietary foods affect general health as well as oral health. Individual diet recommendations and correct oral hygiene habits should be learned by taking the children to the dentist until the age of 1, after eruption of the 1st primary tooth. Epidemiological studies show that breast milk and breastfeeding have positive effects on the child’s general health, development and psychology, and significantly reduce the risk of mant acute and chronic diseases. However, systematic reviews show that babies who are breastfed for up to 12 months have a low risk of dental caries and babies who are breastfed for more than 12 months have an increased risk of dental caries. In 2017, the Committee on Nutiriton of the American Academy of Pediatrics reported that the 100% natural juices and juice drinks did not play a role in healthy nutrition in children, nut they contained excess calories and were at risk for dental caries in children. Frequent use of over the container analgesics, antipyretics, cough syrups, and cold medicines should be approached with care. In this presentation, it is aimed to share nutrition recommendations for oral health in children. Keywords: Dental caries, Diet, Nutrition
