Objective: Nevi are congenitally occurring or acquired lesions, which can be localized on sun-exposed or non-exposed sites of the human body. However, some nevi may have atypical appearences, which are classified as the precursor of melanoma. This increases the importance of nevi. However, in our community, there are many misconceptions about nevi and sun. Our aim was to evaluate knowledge and attitudes of dermatology outpatients on nevi and sun. Material and Methods: 700 patients with nevi older than 18 years old were recruited in this trial. The questionnaires including items on knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards nevi were self-filled by the patients and the results were analyzed statistically. Results: The study included, 700 patients (400 females and 300 males). Most of the patients (91.3%) defined nevi as a "brown blotch" and 63.6% of the patients did not follow up the changes in their nevi. A total of 258 (36.9%) patients thought that nevi were usually transformed into cancer. However, %97.6 of the patients did not consult a doctor. A total of 615 (87.9) patients preferred to be informed by a doctor. 347 (49.6%) patients blamed the sun for their nevi. Conclusion: Our results showed that dermatology outpatients needed to have correct, reliable and adequate information about nevi. We believe that it is necessary to inform the community about this subject and to develop relevant education programs.
