ACTINOMYCOSIS: CASE REPORT

Abstract

Actinomycosis is a chronic, progressive, relatively uncommon infection of the jaws. This infection is usually caused by Actinomyces israelii which is an anaerobic bacteria. The aim of this article is to show actinomycosis as one of the rare maxillofacial infections, which is resistant to medical therapy. A 24-year-old male was referred to our department with the complaint of pain and swelling in the submandibular region and the neck with limiting mouth opening. According to clinical, radiographic and microbiological investigations, he was diagnosed as Actinomycosis and treated in this manner. Treatment modalities include combination of surgical intervention and antibiotheraphy. In our case similiar treatment was applied, the patient followed periodically for weekly then monthly, full recovery without any complication has been seen.
