It is a well-known fact that the etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is multifactorial. Therefore, the management of this disorder can only be possible with a multidisciplinary approach. In this team, dentists have an important role, which can be summarized in three topics: 1- To diagnose a patient with symptoms of this disorder and refer to the related clinics, 2- To apply necessary procedures correctly in the field of dentistry, 3- To avoid performing procedures that may lead to TMDs in general dental practice. A well-organized team including qualified dentists would contribute to the more effective treatment of TMD patients. One of the most frequently seen issues in the dental clinic is "myofacial pain-dysfunction syndrome". In fact, this disorder can be treated merely by a physiatrist however, in cases of concomitant bruxism, an occlusal splint would significantly support the overall therapy. Therefore, a dentist should be able to diagnose both the myofacial pain disorder and the bruxism, should be working with a well-organized team and furthermore, should be capable of applying occlusal splints and permanent occlusal rehabilitations.
