The Sıbyân Mekteps (Prımary Schools) And Populatıon In Bılâd-I Selâse (Three Towns: Üsküdar, Galata And Eyüp) In The Early Part Of The 18th Century

The first stage of regular educational institutions in Ottoman Empire was called “sıbyân mektebi”. The reliable statistical information on the numbers of sıbyân mektebis in The Ottoman Empire was of scarce. A document in the Ottoman Archives dated H 1123/ A.D. 1711 referred to the names of sıbyân mektebi in Bilâd-ı Selâse (three towns: Üsküdar, Galata and Eyüp) which were located next to Istanbul. We do not have the certain population information regarding to the 18th century but, some population forecasting have been made. In this article, population forecasting of that period is examined, the details of the sıbyân mektebi in the above mentioned document were presented and also the population in those dates were estimated based on the number of the schools and on the information obtained 100 years later from some documents.
